Audio Bio Reflection

From the "I am from Poem" that I created I first took the most meaningful thing that I wrote about which was my family and decided I wanted to incorporate that in my audio essay. I knew from the start I wanted to talk about winter and skiing, and how important that has been in my life. The skiing aspect changed into something else after I received feedback. I had a hard time thinking about how I could include my grandfather in the story, I knew that I wanted to include him because he has had such a big impact on my life especially over the past couple of years, but I didn't want the story to be sad, and hopefully it did not come across that way.  I wanted the story to be moving to people and to show a bit of how alzheimer's disease has really impacted my life.

I first started writing the script based off the "I am from Poem" but I didn't really like the format of it because for me I wanted just to talk about one thing specifically which was skiing. As I was writing I found myself writing about winter and skiing I had so many details that I wanted to include that it was hard for me just to include a small portion of what I wanted to write. Before recording I read my script at least three times or so, to make sure it was organized and flowed well. Next I decided to record, which took a long time to do. I kept on making mistakes or I just did not like the way that it sounded. For me it was hard listening to my own voice, and at some points my voice just sounded so monotone and I did not know how to really fix that. After I had finally liked the way the recording sounded, my next step was to find music. The music portion of the audio bio is something that I wish I would have done differently. It took me awhile to find music that I thought would go along well with what I had written. The music is the one thing that I wish I would have taken more time to figure out and the one aspect of the audio bio that I do not really like.

Overall, I really enjoy my audio bio. I think it serves as something that everyone would be able to listen to and to understand what I was trying to get across. I wish I would have included more about my grandfather but I did not want the story just to be about him, I wanted it to be about the memories I have of him, and tying that into the resort I always go to. The music was the aspect of the audio bio that I thought was lacking. I'm not sure the placement of it sounds good or if it is just the piece of music that I selected. In the final draft of the audio bio though I thought the music sounded a little better but I think I could have done some more work on it. I also tried working on the tone of my voice, which in the end I think I had a good range of tones throughout the audio bio. From working on the audio bio I have definitely learned that it is not easy to record, it takes a lot of trials and error before you get the desired sound that you want. This was the first time that I have ever shared my story and I can really see how hard it is, and how sometimes it can be difficult for people to share their own. This project made me appreciate story telling and how it can be an effective tool for learning about people's life stories that they may have not otherwise been able to share.
